Trial vs. Temptation (試煉 vs. 試探)
(both words came from the same Greek root “Peiura”)

Trial (Greek word # 3986 “peirasmo”)
- to try whether a thing can be done
- to try for the purpose of improvement (quality, thought, behavior…)
- to test one’s faith, virtue, character by resistant of sin

Temptation (Greek word # 3985 “peirazo”)
- to solicit to sin

Where does it come from?

Trials - (1) War, disasters, society, accident…
(2) God allows circumstances in our lives,
like broken relationship, difficult people, lost job…
(3) Consequences of our bad decisions in the past

Temptation – come from our desires within (Satan),
like craving, lust, pride (彼前 2:16)

Read: 4:1-11, 4:1-13, 4:15-16

Understanding trials/difficulties:

1.  Difficulties are inevitable
Jesus said “In this world you will have trouble.”  16:33
You know quite well that we were destined for them.”

2.  Difficulties are unpredictable

3.  Difficulties are various

4.  Difficulties are intentional
“Because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.  Perseverance must finish in work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

The Purpose of trials:

1) 困難可以淨化我們的信心 (Test your faith)

Gold refinement process:
When the furnace’s contents are completely melted, the furnace is tilted and the molten material is poured into a conical mold.  Worthless black slag forms on the top and is broken from the underlying gold button once it cools.  The buttons are again placed in the furnace, melted and poured into bar molds.

Read:

(Develop perseverance)

“Perseverance” in Greek means “Constancy”.  It’s a process to maturity.

Read: 10:36, 21:19, 6:18

3) 困難可以幫助我們成熟 (maybe mature and complete, not lacking anything)

Read:

Remember:
God is more concerned about our characters than our comfort.
God uses circumstance to develop our character.
God uses problems to draw you closer to Him.
Problems force us to look to God and depend on Him instead of ourselves.
Everything that happens to you has spiritual significance.

Our Attitude toward trials:

1. Consider it pure joy ( 1:3-5)
WHY – “because you know…” ( 1:3)
Know what -
(1)  God’s tests make us mature & complete. ( 26:2, 1:3-4)
(2)  God’s plan is good. ( 29:11, 2:13)
(3)  God is with us. It’s not unbearable.
(4)  It’s not in vain.
(5)  It’s temporary.

HOW to be joyful –
Happiness is based on circumstances.
Joy comes from the Holy Spirit. ( 5:22, 14:17)

(1)  Joy is a matter of choice.
(2)  Joy is a matter of obedience. ( 4:4, 10-13,
(3)  Joy is a matter of focus. ( 3:13-14,

2. Ask for wisdom ( 1:5-8)
(1)  God wants to give us wisdom. ( 11:9-13, 3:20, 29:12)
(2)  Ask without doubt.
Why we doubt - Our own pride ( 3:5-7, 11:2)
Satan’s way to lead us astray-doubt God’s love ( 4:20, 8:38)
Double-minded ( 4:4, 8)
(3)  Ask by faith. ( 37:4, 34:10, 1:6,

3. Rely on God ( 4:6)
We should believe – God has better plan/purpose ( 55:9)
God will give us strength (林後 12:9, 8:34-35)
God is on our side ( 8:31)
God is in control ( 16:33, 8:28)

Temptation:
The act of tempting, an enticement to do something wrong by promise of pleasure or gain.

Temptation comes from:
1.     Satan (彼前 5:8, 8:44, 4:1)
2.     Persecution (帖前 3:4-5)
3.     World/Influence of other people ( 6:1, 彼前 4:3-4, 18:7-9)
4.     Our desires within us ( 5:16-21)
5.     Our pride (約壹 2:16, 6:17)
6.     Wealth (提前 6:9-10, 19:23-24)
7.     Laziness/Easy way out ( 24:30-34, 7:13-14, 10:4)

God never leads us into sin.  It’s against God’s nature to be tempted or to tempt.
Sin finds its origin within us.  It’s a growing process.
 Lust -> Sin -> Death   ( 6:23, 7:5)

Man’s first reaction is to blame others for his own sin or temptation.  ( 3:12-13)
God’s goodness is constant à no change, no turning.  ( 7:9-10)

* First fruit -> Jewish term ( 26:1-11, 18:4), means (1) chief (2) principal part
1.     Jesus (林前 15:20, 23)
2.     Holy Spirit ( 8:23)
3.     Early Christians ( 1:18, 14:4)
4.     Gentiles ( 11:16, 16:5, 林前 16:15)

Growing through temptation

1.     We think temptation lies around us, but God says it begins within us. ( 4:1)
2.     Satan confuses us with deception. ( 8:44, 3:4)
3.     We develop doubt during temptation. ( 3:12-14, 3:6)
4.     Disobedience is the final act of temptation. ( 1:14-16, 3:6)

Temptation simply provides the choice.  Character development always involves a choice, and temptation provides that opportunity.  Every time you choose to do God’s way instead of sin, you are growing in the character of Christ.

Some people seem to succeed at everything they try – careers, families, spiritual lives...When you get close to people like this and try to understand just how they manage fulfill so much of their potential, you find that in almost every case one quality plays a key role – discipline.”
-Bill Hybels-

How to overcome temptations:

1. Refuse to doubt God’s love. ( 12:2, 8:38-39)
2. Resist the temptation. (119:9, 1:7, 6:21-23, 19:23)
3. Don’t let your guard down.
4. Ask for God’s help. ( 4:15-16,
5. Refocus your life on God’s purpose. ( 1:12,

When we’re speaking, we’re NOT listening.
